SOUNDBRENNER WAVE VS AIRPODS PRO 2: WIRED IEMS OR WIRELESS EARBUDS FOR MUSICIANS?

Singer wearing Soundbrenner Wave in-ear monitors on stage

This comparison is not really about which product is more advanced. AirPods Pro 2 are full of technology. Soundbrenner Wave is deliberately simpler.

The useful question is which one is better for a musician. For daily life, AirPods Pro 2 are obviously more convenient. For practice, latency-sensitive monitoring, and wired reliability, Wave has the stronger argument.

That is why I would not treat AirPods Pro 2 as a replacement for proper wired IEMs. They are excellent consumer earbuds. They are not the tool I would pick when timing, monitoring, and reliability matter.

Quick verdict: AirPods Pro 2 are better everyday wireless earbuds. Soundbrenner Wave is the better musician practice tool. If you need calls, ANC, transparency mode, and pocket convenience, choose AirPods. If you need wired reliability, no Bluetooth latency, and a stable practice monitor, choose Wave.

WHO SHOULD BUY WHAT

  • Choose Wave: if your priority is practicing, monitoring, recording, or playing with a wired connection and no Bluetooth latency.
  • Choose AirPods Pro 2: if you want the more convenient daily earbuds for calls, commuting, transparency mode, and active noise cancellation.
  • Own both if possible: because they solve different problems: AirPods for daily life, Wave for musician work.

How I test: this page draws on the same weeks of hands-on testing and 200+ hours of listening behind my ranking of the 13 best in-ear monitors for musicians, where Wave Pro 2 finished #1 overall. I weight comfort, fit, isolation, sound, build, and value more heavily than spec-sheet claims. For the deeper hands-on breakdown, read the full Soundbrenner Wave review.

WHERE AIRPODS PRO 2 CLEARLY WIN

AirPods Pro 2 are better for normal life. They are wireless, easy to carry, great for calls, and useful on trains, planes, walks, and workdays.

Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode are also genuinely useful. If your main goal is convenience, Apple wins.

That is the lane where AirPods should be respected. They are not bad because they are consumer earbuds. They are excellent at being consumer earbuds.

WHERE WAVE IS THE BETTER MUSICIAN TOOL

Wave wins when the task is music work. A wired connection means you are not relying on Bluetooth timing, battery charge, or wireless behavior when you are practicing or monitoring.

That matters more than people think, and it is worth putting a number on. Bluetooth typically adds somewhere around 100 to 200 milliseconds of delay depending on your device and codec. At 120 BPM, a sixteenth note lasts 125 milliseconds - so wireless delay can be the difference between feeling locked in and feeling like you are playing slightly behind yourself.

Wave also uses an over-ear IEM fit that is more appropriate for practice and monitoring. It is less about lifestyle convenience and more about staying secure while you play. One verified buyer summed up the tradeoff more honestly than most marketing would:

"Best earbuds I've had in a long time - they don't hurt the ears even after long wearing time. Unfortunate they aren't Bluetooth capable, but the quality is worth it."

ANC IS NOT THE SAME AS IEM ISOLATION

AirPods Pro 2 use active noise cancellation. Wave uses passive isolation from the ear tip seal. These are different tools.

ANC is great for steady noise and daily life. Passive IEM isolation is often more useful for musicians because it reduces outside sound without relying on microphones, processing, or batteries.

If the goal is commuting, AirPods are easier. If the goal is hearing your instrument and mix without wireless complexity, Wave makes more sense.

THE VERDICT

Buy AirPods Pro 2 for daily wireless convenience. They are better for calls, travel, ANC, and quick listening.

Buy Soundbrenner Wave for musician use. It is cheaper during the current sale, wired, simple, and more appropriate for practice and monitoring.

My ideal answer is not either-or. AirPods are the everyday earbuds. Wave is the musician tool.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I use AirPods Pro 2 for music practice?

You can, but Bluetooth latency and wireless behavior make them less ideal for timing-sensitive practice or monitoring.

Does Wave have active noise cancellation?

No. Wave uses passive isolation through ear tips, which is the more traditional IEM approach.

Which one is better for live performance?

Wave is the better fit for wired monitoring. AirPods Pro 2 are not designed as live stage monitors.
